When it comes to achieving optimal wellness, self-development can be an essential part of the journey. Feeling good about how you look, being content with your job, and forming healthy, mutually beneficial relationships are just a few of the key elements that contribute to an overall sense of well-being. Here are some tips from life and business coach Robin Goldsbro for improving your life through self-development.
Take Steps Towards Regular Exercise
Exercise is one of the best ways to enhance both your mental and physical well-being. Through regular activity, you trigger the mind / body connection which reduces stress, boosts energy levels, and lifts your mood. You don’t need loads of time for an intense workout session, taking daily walks or doing basic exercises like jumping jacks or pushups can go a long way toward improving not only your body but also your confidence in yourself.
If you want to be a little more strategic about fitting your 10,000 steps in every day, try eliminating shortcuts both literally and figuratively. Park a little farther from the door, avoid taking the shortest routes when walking, and walk over to a co-worker’s desk instead of sending a digital message. I used to take the longest route to my desk! Each small change compounds and you get better results.
Improve Sleep Quality
Getting enough quality sleep is crucial for overall well-being as it helps restore energy levels, regulate emotions, and improve concentration levels throughout the day. To get better sleep at night avoid caffeine late in the day and limiting screen time before bedtime — both of these habits can interfere with getting quality restful sleep. It’s also a good idea to set up a regular bedtime routine and stick to it. This can include a hot shower before bed, a soothing cup of tea and time spent reading a book – but not on your phone!
Establish Limits
Learning to set boundaries is an empowering part of any self-improvement plan and something work on with almost all my clients. Boundaries help us distinguish between what behaviours are appropriate or inappropriate and what we are and are not willing to tolerate in our lives. The Science of People explains that by setting limits and honoring our own needs, we reassert control over our lives and attract those who respect us for having the courage to do so.
Establishing boundaries can take quite a bit of effort because setting and managing them takes practice; however, when done correctly, it’s a life-changing experience that promotes interpersonal growth and mental health in the long run.
Eat Healthier
Eating right is an important part of any self-improvement plan. You are what you eat and when you fuel your body with nutritious foods that are right for you, you feel more energized, alert, and ready to take on the world. Start by trefreshing yourself with some basics that make up a balanced diet, and make sure to include plenty of fruits, vegetables, carbohydrates and proteins in your meals. Also, don’t fall into incorrect ideas that all fat is bad; add in some healthy fats like nuts or seeds. Lastly, be conscious of portion size and eat consciously so that you only eat what you need; you don’t want extra calories! If you want to learn more about eating healthily I’d highly recommend the books by professor Tim Spector.
Practice Meditation
Learning to meditate is a great way to work towards well-being. Not only does meditation help reduce stress and improve focus, but it’s a source of insight, calmness and innate wisdom. Through regular practice, those who meditate can start to notice patterns of thoughts that lead to anxiety, anger or any other emotion that may be holding them back from achieving their optimal potential.
As we get to know ourselves better, we become more conscious of our own emotional reactions and better able to respond rather than react in difficult situations. The less we have on our mind the less challenges we face.
Find a New Career and Update Your Resume and CV
If you’re not feeling fulfilled in your current job, perhaps its time to consider making a change. Take some time to evaluate what type of career would make you happiest and where you can make the most contribution. Then take steps toward achieving that goal by updating your resume, networking with professionals in the industry, and researching potential job opportunities.
Your CV is an essential part of job hunting, and keeping it up-to-date isn’t just a fantastic way to boost your chances of getting the role you’ve been dreaming of but the process of reviewing and updating your CV remind you of how capable you are. Using a CV builder can help make your CV look professional and succinct. Even if you don’t plan on applying for roles soon, updating your CV regularly or when your experience changes can help keep track of your journey through self-improvement.
Make Positive Changes for Increased Happiness
The road to self-improvement can be a challenging yet rewarding journey! Taking small steps really helps, like healthier eating and getting more exercise. Perhaps it’s time to change your job or learning to mediate. Whatever you start with first make it small and build on that foundation. Small incremental steps compound over time and this approach allows you to make small changes as needed.
