Have you ever achieved something huge, only to find yourself in search of the next goal before you’ve even had a chance to fully enjoy the success of your previous accomplishment? Let me tell you about the “the forward gap.” And why it’s important when defining and achieving success.
What is the Forward Gap?
It’s easy for us to get wrapped up in the idea that achieving a certain goal will make us happier or more successful; however, often times achieving those goals doesn’t provide us with lasting satisfaction or contentment.
Many people don’t realize that achieving goals doesn’t necessarily equate with happiness or fulfillment. What happens is our expectations of self grow and evolve as we grow and evolve. Therefore what good looks like moves out. One problem here is that when we don’t experience this feeling of satisfaction after achieving our goals, we may become discouraged and give up on pursuing any further objectives altogether.
What can be done about it?
When we think of success, we tend to focus on the end goal – riches, fame, power, etc. – instead of focusing on the process and journey that it takes to get there. This can lead us to constantly strive for more without taking the time to acknowledge and appreciate our accomplishments along the way. (You should have some awareness of the goal mind!)
You might have realised that if there is a forward gap there probably is a backward gap, and you’d be correct. The backward gap is when we reflect upon how far we’ve come, how much we’ve grown, and how much more at ease we are with things that were once challenging. We’d do well to stop for a while, turn around, and appreciate how far we’ve come.
Another way to avoid getting caught up in the forward gap trap is by shifting our focus away from the end result and instead enjoying every step of the process. Focusing too much on reaching your goal can create anxiety and stress which can be counter-productive; instead, emphasize the importance of learning new skills or developing creative ideas along your journey. Taking pleasure in each step will help you stay motivated while avoiding burnout—and ultimately be more successful in the long run!
In summary – Success is Not static – It’s Dynamic
It’s important for business leaders and entrepreneurs alike to recognize that success is not static – it’s dynamic. This means that while striving for your goals and achieving them can give us moments of satisfaction or joy, they don’t usually provide us with lasting happiness or fulfillment without taking time to reflect and internalise.
We can learn to focus on what matters most during your journey towards success – staying focused on your purpose and values while celebrating each victory along the way! This will ensure that you stay motivated and driven while avoiding burnout caused by chasing after an elusive target called “success”.
With these tips in mind, you can keep moving steadily towards your dreams without being stuck in an endless cycle of striving for something better but never quite reaching it!
